A lithium-ion fire behaves differently from an ordinary one. Cells can overheat, release toxic gas and catch fire again hours later. An ordinary ABC or CO2 unit may knock the flame down, but it does not cool the cell underneath.
This page explains how a lithium battery fire extinguisher in Hyderabad works, where they belong and what they cannot do. Our guide to types of fire extinguishers shows how they sit beside the other kinds. Rooms that also hold costly electronics may need a clean agent fire extinguisher as well.
Why lithium cells are hard to put out
When a lithium-ion cell is damaged, overcharged or defective, it can enter thermal runaway. The cell heats itself, vents flammable and toxic gas and passes the heat to the next cell in the pack.
Flames can be suppressed while the cells stay hot. The fire then returns, sometimes after a long gap. That reignition risk is why cooling matters more here than in most fires.
How an AVD unit works
AVD stands for aqueous vermiculite dispersion. The unit sprays water carrying tiny vermiculite platelets. The water cools the cells, and the platelets coat the surface to form a barrier that slows reignition.
ISI-marked AVD models are now sold in India. Treat the unit as one layer of defence. For a vehicle or large battery bank, people still leave the area, cut the charging power if it is safe to do so, and call the fire service.
Which extinguisher for which battery risk
Match the lithium battery fire extinguisher in Hyderabad to what is stored and charged. The table gives a practical starting point.
- Place
- EV charging bay
- Main risk
- Pack in a car or scooter
- First unit to place
- AVD unit plus fire service call
- Place
- E-bike charging corner
- Main risk
- Cheap chargers left overnight
- First unit to place
- AVD unit and a rule on charging hours
- Place
- UPS or battery room
- Main risk
- Lithium bank or lead-acid mix
- First unit to place
- AVD unit and CO2 for panels
- Place
- Mobile and laptop shop
- Main risk
- Loose cells and returns
- First unit to place
- AVD unit near the stock shelf
What it will not do
No portable unit promises to stop every battery fire. A pack that has started runaway can burn for a long time. Evacuate first, keep the way out clear and do not use water hoses on live charging gear.
Pair the AVD unit with a CO2 fire extinguisher for the electrical panel nearby, and a smoke detector in the charging room.
Battery fire cover across Hyderabad
Gated communities in Kokapet and Bachupally are adding EV charging points to basement parking. Residents also charge e-scooters in lobbies and stairwells, which blocks the exit if a battery catches fire. We suggest a charging bay with an AVD unit on the wall and a clear sign.
Offices in Madhapur and Gachibowli run UPS rooms and keep delivery bikes for staff. Warehouses in Uppal and Jeedimetla charge many e-bikes in one place, so a single unit is rarely enough.
The Telangana State Disaster Response & Fire Services department can ask about battery storage during a safety inspection. Our Hyderabad team can survey the site and mount the units. For battery stores in the port city, see the Visakhapatnam lithium battery page.

Standards and approvals
AVD units are built to IS 15683 where ISI-marked, and selection and placement follow IS 2190, so check the current revision. Some makers also cite the Dutch NTA 8133 test protocol for battery fires. Ask for the test report, not only the claim.
A fire safety audit can review charging areas and battery rooms before you buy units.
