Carbon dioxide leaves no powder, foam or water behind, so a CO2 fire extinguisher in Hyderabad is the usual pick beside electronics. It has limits, though. The jet is short, it does little against burning paper or cloth, and the gas can hurt people in a small closed room. Our guide to types of fire extinguishers puts it next to the other types.
This page covers where CO2 works, how to check a cylinder, and what to watch in a hot city.
How CO2 puts out a fire
A CO2 fire extinguisher in Hyderabad works by pushing air away from the flame and cools it a little as it leaves the horn. It does not conduct electricity, so it is safe on live equipment, and nothing needs wiping afterwards. That makes it right for Class B liquids and for panels, switchgear and instruments.
It is weak on Class A fires such as paper, wood and cloth. The gas drifts away, and the embers can flare again. For those fuels, pair it with an ABC powder unit nearby.
Sizes and where each fits
CO2 cylinders are heavy for their size, because the gas is stored as liquid under high pressure. Choose a size that one person can carry to the fire.
- Size
- 2 kg or 3 kg
- Typical place
- Small panel room, lab bench, vehicle
- Note
- Easy to carry, short discharge
- Size
- 4.5 kg
- Typical place
- Server room, UPS room, office electrical room
- Note
- Most common in offices
- Size
- 6.5 kg
- Typical place
- LT panel room, DG room, workshop
- Note
- Needs a strong bracket
- Size
- 9 kg
- Typical place
- Larger plant rooms and process areas
- Note
- Heavy, often on a trolley or stand
Checking a cylinder by weight
A CO2 unit has no pressure gauge to read. Gas leaks out slowly, so the check is done by weighing the cylinder against the weight stamped on it. When the loss passes the maker's limit, the cylinder is sent for refilling.
We weigh each unit at every service, note the figure and tell you the result. Pressure tests on the cylinder follow the maker's life and the schedule in IS 2190.
- Weigh the cylinder against the stamped weight
- Check the seal and safety pin
- Inspect the hose and horn for cracks
- Record the date on the tag
Safety around the horn and in small rooms
The discharge horn becomes extremely cold, and bare skin can freeze on contact. Hold only the insulated handle. In a small closed room, CO2 can displace the air a person breathes, so use it from the doorway and leave soon after. A powder or clean agent unit may suit such a room better, and our ABC fire extinguisher in Hyderabad page explains when.
CO2 units in Hyderabad server and panel rooms
Data rooms and LT panel rooms in the Financial District and Nanakramguda sit under tall glass towers, where a single tripped breaker can stop a whole tenant. A CO2 unit at the door of each room lets a guard act on the first spark without wrecking the boards.
Summer heat in the city can pass 44 degrees. A cylinder in a hot car or shed holds more pressure than one in a cool room. Store units indoors, out of direct sun, and weigh them more often in the hot months.
The Telangana State Disaster Response & Fire Services expects electrical risk areas to carry suitable units, and we help you pick them. For wider gas protection of a room, see electrical panel fire suppression in Hyderabad. Teams on the coast can look at CO2 fire extinguisher in Visakhapatnam.
