Canvas or rubber-lined hoses connect to the landing valves of a hydrant system. They come in standard lengths with couplings at each end, and the branch pipe at the end shapes the jet. Hoses should be rolled, kept dry and tested regularly, because a cracked lining fails under pressure.

Hose reels are smaller and stay connected, so one person can pull out the hose and open the valve. They suit corridors, stores and parking areas. They work alongside your fire hydrant system, not instead of it.

Fire buckets filled with sand still have a place in DG rooms, fuel stores and workshops. Sand soaks up oil spills and smothers small fires where water would spread them. Fill them with dry sand and keep them on a stand.

Fire blankets belong in kitchens, pantries and labs. Pull the tapes, lay the blanket over the pan and leave it. Exit signs should be visible from every point on an escape route. Photoluminescent signs and floor strips glow for a time after the lights fail, which helps in stairs and basements.

Some equipment cannot be picked from a catalogue. Fire pumps, sprinkler heads, pipework, alarm panels and detectors must be sized to the building, its height and its hazard. Buying them before the design is done often means buying twice.
