What a fire alarm hooter does
A hooter is an electronic sounder wired to the control panel. When a detector or call point signals a fire, the fire alarm control panel switches the hooter on and it sounds a loud tone. The tone differs between homes, offices and industrial sites, but the job is the same: get people moving before they can see smoke.
A hooter only helps if people can hear it. A common rule from NFPA 72 asks for an alarm at least 15 dB above the average background noise, so a canteen or machine shop needs louder or more units than a quiet office. In noisy areas we add a strobe light or fit a hooter cum strobe, so the warning is seen as well as heard.

A hooter must suit the panel that drives it. Conventional and addressable panels use different hooters, and each panel has a limit on how much current its sounder circuits can carry. Keeping hooters working
A hooter that fails silently is a hazard, so every hooter should be sounded during each maintenance visit and each fire drill. A loose cable or a failed sounder circuit usually shows on the panel as a fault, which is one more reason to keep the panel and hooters on the same service schedule.
