Strobe Lights

A strobe light produces very short, intense flashes in rapid succession. In a fire alarm system it switches on with the alarm and flashes until the panel is reset. The flash catches the eye from across a room, which makes it useful where a sound alarm is not enough on its own.

It works alongside your fire alarm system and takes its signal from the control panel, like a hooter does.

These are the situations where we recommend adding a strobe:

You can fit a strobe next to an existing hooter, or choose a hooter cum strobe that puts both in one housing. A combined unit is neater and needs one cable run, while a separate strobe lets you add a visual alarm to a system you already have. We recommend one or the other after seeing your site.

Every strobe is switched on from the panel at commissioning, and we check from the work area that the flash is clearly visible. Strobes that sit behind pipework, shelving or a glass partition are moved before handover, not after your first fire drill.

A strobe draws more current than a plain sounder, so the panel's sounder output and battery must be checked before more are added. We check this for every job and add a power supply when the load is high. Units must also suit the panel type, whether conventional or addressable. Builders and architects can plan strobes with the ceiling plan, so each one has a clear line of sight along corridors and across open floors. Industries add strobes to loud plants and commercial building owners to basements and service corridors. Hospital owners add them where a loud siren is unwelcome until the alarm is real. Each strobe is added to the cause-and-effect plan, not left as an accessory. MEP consultants can pass us the ceiling and services drawings and we mark strobe positions and loads. Corporates use strobes in open offices and service areas.
