What a fire alarm panel does
A fire alarm control panel is the electronic control unit of a fire alarm system. It connects to devices such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, multi-detectors, beam detectors, manual call points (MCPs) and hooters. When a detector or call point sends a signal, the panel activates the connected hooters and visual alarms to alert people to smoke or fire.
The panel may also supply electrical power to sensors, controls and transmitters. It keeps a log of alarms and faults, and a battery keeps it running through a power cut.
Three types of fire alarm panel
Fire alarm panels come in three types. Which one you need depends on the size of the building and how precisely you want to know where a fire starts:

- Semi-addressable panel: a middle option that gives more location detail than a plain zone panel

Using relays to switch other equipment
The panel has relays that can connect to the power supply of other equipment that needs to switch off or change when there is a fire. A cheap panel can cost more in the end. Check these points before you buy:
- How many zones or addressable points it supports, and room to grow
- Whether replacement parts and detectors will be available in years to come
- Battery backup duration and how the panel reports a low battery
- Whether it connects to hooters, strobes and any monitoring you want
- Who will service it, and how fast they can reach your site
