Why hazardous areas need a flameproof sounder
In petrochemical plants, fuel stores and solvent rooms, an ordinary electrical sounder can be a source of ignition. A flame proof hooter has a sealed enclosure designed to contain any internal spark, so the alarm itself cannot start a fire. It connects directly to the control panel, which switches it on when the alarm trips.
In hazardous areas the hooter gives a loud sound or siren, typically 110 to 141 dB, along with a flashing indication. Hooters can also give warnings for other activities, and the sound differs by use in buildings, industries or homes.
Specifications to check before you buy
Flame proof hooters are available with an operating voltage of 230 VAC or 24 VDC. The flashing indication can be LED or xenon type, and units suit wall and surface mounting. Beyond these, buyers should check:

- Sound level in dB at the distance that matters on your site
- Operating voltage, to match your panel or power supply

Testing and upkeep
Hazardous-area equipment must be kept in the condition it was approved in. At each service visit we check that the enclosure is intact and the cover bolts are complete, that cable glands are tight and sealed, and that the hooter sounds from the panel. A cracked cover or a missing bolt can cancel the protection the enclosure gives, so it is replaced, not patched.
