Anyone buying cameras now has to pick IP or analogue. The IP vs analogue CCTV decision turns on resolution, cable, budget and how much the system must grow. This guide explains both types in plain terms and says when each makes sense.
How analogue systems work
Analogue cameras send video over coaxial cable to a digital video recorder. Modern high-definition analogue cameras carry better pictures over the same cable. Power usually runs over separate wires.
Our page on analogue CCTV cameras lists the options.
How IP systems work
IP cameras send video over a network cable to a network video recorder. A single cable can also carry power, using power over Ethernet. Cameras connect to switches, and the whole system can use the same network design as the office.
See our IP camera installation page for details.
Picture and features
IP cameras reach higher resolutions and offer wider features, such as analytics, audio, and many video streams. HD analogue cameras give good pictures at modest resolution and suit small sites.
For number plates, faces and long distances, IP is usually the safer choice.
Cable, cost and distance
Reusing old coaxial cable can cut the cost of an upgrade. IP needs network cable, which has a standard length limit of 100 metres per run, so longer runs need switches or fibre. IP recorders and cameras cost more, but the system scales easily.

Which should you buy
Choose analogue for a small site with existing coax cable and a tight budget. It gives a clear picture at modest resolution, and it is easy to service in most towns. Choose IP for a new build, a large site, high resolution or analytics. A hybrid recorder can run both while you move over in stages. We plan the order of the move with you, so that critical areas change first and the cost is spread over time.
Mistakes to avoid
Buyers who compare IP vs analogue CCTV often stumble on these points.
- Choosing the cheapest camera without checking the cable already in the walls
- Placing IP cameras beyond the cable length limit, then adding patch fixes
- Forgetting that IP needs switches and a network plan
- Mixing brands that do not work together on one recorder
- Skipping a trial, so no one checks the picture at night
