Power over Ethernet
Power over Ethernet carries electricity and video on a single network cable. This removes separate power points at each camera and makes the system easy to expand.
A standard network cable can run up to about 100 metres. Longer runs need a switch or a fibre link, and we plan these at the design stage.
Cameras, recorder and storage
Resolution, lens and frame rate decide the picture. A high-resolution camera on a narrow lens can read faces at a gate. A wide lens suits a corridor. The NVR stores the video, and disk size sets the days of footage.

Network security
A camera network should be kept apart from the office network and protected with strong passwords. Default passwords on cameras are a known risk. We change them, keep the camera network on its own switch or VLAN and limit remote access.
