This page is part of our entrance automation solutions range. A lock and a key tell you nothing. You never know who opened the server room last night, and a lost key means changing locks. Access control systems in Visakhapatnam fix both problems: every entry is logged, and a lost card is blocked in a minute. We plan each door around who uses it, how often, and what happens in a fire. Our door access control page covers single-door units in more detail.
Parts of an access control system
Every controlled door has the same basic parts. The reader checks who is asking to enter. A controller decides yes or no and tells the lock to open. An exit button lets people leave from inside, and the power supply keeps everything running, with a battery for power cuts.
Software ties the doors together. It holds the list of users, the doors they may open, and the times they may enter. Small sites can run on a standalone unit at each door, while larger sites use networked controllers and one central program.
- Reader: card, keypad, fingerprint or face
- Controller: one door or many, standalone or networked
- Lock: magnetic, electric strike or drop bolt
- Exit button and emergency break glass
- Door contact to show if a door is left open
- Power supply with battery backup
- Software for users, schedules and reports
Credential types compared
The credential is what a person shows the reader. Each type has trade-offs in cost, speed and how easily it can be shared. Many sites mix types, such as cards for staff and face readers for a server room.
| Credential | Strengths | Weak points | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card or key tag | Low cost, fast, easy to issue and block | Can be lent or lost | Offices, hotels, apartments |
| Mobile phone | No card to carry, easy to issue remotely | Needs a charged phone and an app | Modern offices, co-working spaces |
| Fingerprint | Cannot be lent, no card to lose | Dirty or worn fingers read poorly | Small offices, labs, stores |
| Face | Touch-free, fast, cannot be lent | Needs good lighting and setup care | Server rooms, hospitals, busy entrances |
Choosing the right lock
The lock depends on the door, not on the reader. A magnetic lock holds a door shut with an electromagnet and suits glass and aluminium doors. An electric strike replaces the keeper in the frame and suits wooden doors with an existing lock. A drop bolt shoots a pin into the frame and suits frameless glass doors.
We check the door's material, frame, closer and hinge side on the survey. A strong lock on a weak frame only moves the problem, so loose frames are fixed before we fit anything.
Fire-safe design that never traps people
On an escape route, a locked door must open in a fire. We wire each controlled door on an escape path to release when the fire alarm goes off. Magnetic locks and most drop bolts lose hold when power is cut, so they fail safe by design.
Every door also gets a manual way out. A green break glass unit beside the door cuts power to the lock if all else fails. This link to the fire alarm is a core part of fire and CCTV integration, and we test it at handover with the fire alarm team present.
Time attendance, visitors and audit logs
The same readers can record staff attendance. Each entry and exit is logged with the time, and reports can be exported for payroll. For sites that need only attendance, our biometric attendance system page covers standalone units.
Visitors can get a temporary card or a code that expires at the end of the day. Pair the gate with a video door phone, and reception can see who is waiting before letting them in. Audit logs show who opened which door and when, which helps after a theft or a dispute.
Turnstiles, boom barriers and gates
Access control does not stop at doors. Turnstiles at a factory or office entrance let one person through per card or face, which stops tailgating. Boom barriers control vehicles at a gate, using a card reader, a remote or a number plate camera.
Motorised gates and barriers can share the same software as the doors. That way one card or one face works everywhere a person is allowed to go, and one report shows all of it.
Access control across Vizag offices, hospitals, hotels and ports
Offices in Siripuram, Dwaraka Nagar and MVP Colony usually start with the main door and the server room, then add floors over time. Hospitals near Maharanipeta and Seethammadhara need controlled pharmacy stores, records rooms and staff-only corridors, with face readers where hands must stay clean.
Hotels around Rushikonda want card access for staff areas and back-of-house stores. Port-linked businesses and warehouses in Gajuwaka and Autonagar need vehicle gates, turnstiles and boundary control, often tied to CCTV.
Salt air and humidity are hard on outdoor readers and gate motors. We fit weather-rated readers with hoods and check seals at every visit. Our Suryabagh office plans and installs access control systems in Visakhapatnam, and the Visakhapatnam office page lists our other services. For Hyderabad, see access control systems in Hyderabad.

Standards and approvals
Locks on escape routes must fail safe in a fire and follow the exit provisions of NBC 2016 Part 4. Readers, locks and controllers must not block an exit that the Andhra Pradesh Fire Services Department expects to stay usable. Where an inspector asks, we share the wiring and release details for each door.
