Residents tire of cards, tags and guards waving cars through. ANPR for gated communities promises hands-free entry and a record of every vehicle. It works well when the site is prepared for it, and poorly when it is not. This guide explains how it works, what to expect and what to settle before you buy.
How ANPR works at a gate
A camera reads the number plate as a vehicle approaches. Software converts the image to text and compares it with a list. If the plate belongs to a resident, the barrier lifts. If not, the guard decides, or the visitor's pre-approval is checked.
Our ANPR camera system page describes the parts.
What decides accuracy
Light matters most. Headlights, glare and deep shade confuse cameras, so lane lighting and camera angle need care. Speed matters too, because a fast vehicle blurs. Dirty, bent or unusual plates read poorly.
A good system lets the guard correct errors and adds a second proof for important cases. Do not expect perfect reads.
Residents and visitors
Residents register their vehicles, and the society updates the list when someone sells a car or adds a second one. Visitors can be pre-approved by an app or called in by the guard.
Tags or cards can stay as a backup for plates that fail. See also boom barriers for the gate hardware.
Data and privacy
ANPR records plates, times and often images. The society should decide who can see them, how long they are kept and how they are protected. Residents should know what is recorded.
Check how privacy law applies to your society and take advice where needed. We set user levels, but the policy is yours.
Gate layout and safety
Lanes must be wide enough, with a stopping point clear of the road, so that queues do not block traffic. Barriers need safety loops and sensors, and a manual release in a power cut. Our parking management page covers visitor flows.
Mistakes to avoid
Committees that adopt ANPR for gated communities often face these problems.
- Installing cameras without lane lighting, so that night reads fail
- Letting the resident list go out of date after sales and new cars
- Having no written rule on who may view plate records
- Removing guards entirely, so no one handles failed reads
- Placing the camera where headlights blind it
Your next step
Send us photos of the gate and the number of flats. We will design the lane, test at night and quote the cameras, barrier and software. Essatech designs, supplies, installs and services these systems in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. Send us your drawings or photos for a priced plan.
What affects the price
- Number of lanes and cameras
- Lane lighting and poles
- ANPR software and licences
- Barriers and safety sensors
- Resident and visitor app
- Maintenance and cleaning
What to send us
- Photos of the gate and lanes
- Number of flats and vehicles
- Visitor volume at peak
- Existing barrier or CCTV
