Why a used or old extinguisher cannot wait
An extinguisher must be recharged after every use, even if you only pressed the handle for a second, because the pressure leaks away. One that is past its service date may also fail when it matters: the gauge reads normal while the powder has caked or a seal has perished. Refilling and testing is the maintenance service that keeps every unit ready for use, and it is the part of fire safety that building managers most often forget.
What fire extinguisher refilling includes
A proper refill is more than topping up. The process we follow has these stages:
- The extinguisher is discharged and emptied, then fully dismantled and the pressure released
- The cylinder undergoes a hydrostatic pressure test at 30 kgf/cm² for 2 minutes, to check for leaks and its ability to withstand pressure
- The cylinder gets a fresh powder coating, baked in an oven at 180° for 15 minutes for a smooth, durable finish
- It is refilled with new agent, such as powder, gas, water or foam, through a vacuum filling process
- New rubber seals, an O-ring and hose pipes are fitted
- The unit is charged with nitrogen and leak tested again
Inspection and servicing
Inspect extinguishers regularly, including monthly checks for readiness, and carry out maintenance at least once a year. During servicing the technician checks for damage, missing parts and substituted parts. The checks cover these items:
- The ring pin, which must move freely and is replaced if bent
- The hose and nozzle assembly, including the O-ring, replaced where damaged
- The passage through the hose and nozzle, which is blown clear
- The air pressurising valve, which is examined for damage
Leaks and damaged parts
Leak repairs and part replacements form part of servicing, and the repair depends on where the fault is. An O-ring leak means a new O-ring on the valve assembly. A valve leak means a new valve assembly and a check of the valve seat. A leak around the gauge threads is fixed by refitting the gauge with Teflon tape, and a faulty gauge is replaced. A cylinder leak goes back to the cylinder supplier under its warranty.
